We moved to Philadelphia on a whim from north jersey. Stumbled upon church street and called Shy from the sign hanging outside. We fell in LOVE with the location, the view from our balcony, and our apartment in general. It's small. Very small. But we make it work because we know we could never get this location, view, or friendly neighbors like this for this price anywhere else!! We've never had a problem with rodents or maintenance. What do you look for in an apartment? Great location, size, renovated, service, and
price. This apartment building is a mixed bag. The front of the building faces a charming, quiet, cobblestoned street in Old City Philadelphia. The apartments on the other side put you in the middle of a raucous bar scene and traffic zone on Market St. Quite the contrast!
Each apartment varies significantly in size. There are large 1br. and small. Some could even be classified as studios. Many are not renovated... . Carpeting is from another century. The hardwood flooring is cheap. Prices vary depending on what you can negotiate with the building owner and property manager.
The most serious problem with his building is the maintenance. The workers generally do a good job, but they are not on site. It takes quite awhile until they get around to making even the most basics repairs. I once went a week with a non working toilet. Think about that one for a minute when there's only one bathroom and two tenants.
Lastly, the building is over 150 years old. It's rodent infested and at least one tenant has reported having bed bugs. Whew!!! Read More
