Deaf Action Center Apt. w/Handicap Accessible In Center of Town
This has been a great apartment for my deaf sister, who has been recently confined to a wheelchair due to spending several weeks in the hospital for COPD. The unit is on the ground floor, parking is right outside the door, and there's a wheelchair access ramp. The doors inside are wide enough doors to get the wheelchair around. The doorbell is a flashing light, which is perfect for deaf people. The complex is in the center of town, and close to just about anything you need in terms of... shopping, restaurants, DART line, medical care and Love Field Airport. DAC is temporarily closing this building so they can rebuild a larger complex. The Deaf Action Center was started by Elizabeth Criswell, who was born to profoundly deaf people. She was a tireless supporter and advocate for deaf people her entire life, although she could hear quite well. The Deaf Action Center has chosen to rename itself Martha's Vineyard, but I'm hoping that maybe they'll rename at least one part of the new building in honor of Elizabeth Criswell, since she started this center and deserves to be honored and remembered.
