Cheerleading: Is it a sport or not? There has always been controversy over whether activities such as cheerleading, equestrian riding and other interests like them count as sports (I think they do). Many of us enjoy playing sports like soccer or kickball, or even a game of ping pong or ice hockey. Here are some obscure sports from around the world. Next time you think about whether or not a certain activity should count as a “sport,” consider these odd past times.
- Cheese Rolling – performed in England, participants chase down a steep hill after cheese.
- Toe Wrestling – This is another odd sport performed in England. What started out as a child’s game is now a competition, with the first World Toe Wrestling Competition being held in 1976.
- Dueling Pistols – Yes, this is what it sounds like. Competitors took turns shooting at a mannequin. This was another past Olympic sport before being discontinued in the games in 1912.
- Tug of War – A fun past time for children and adults alike, this odd sport used to be in the Olympics.
These may or may not have the qualities that you would personally consider “sport worthy,” but to the competitors in the games, the activities are undoubtedly a sport.
