I am disabled and living on social security. I moved out of a supportive living facility because they were stealing all my money. They charged me $1200 per month to live in an apartment worth $600. That was my entire social security, except for $90 per month. It took me 3 years to save enough money to get out. And then I grabbed the first apartment that said YES to me. It was affordable rent, but then I discovered many things that needed upgrading. The place, even though it had many... interesting old characteristics, including many built in wooden book shelves, was old and falling apart. The kitchen is so small that I cannot even open the oven door completely--because it hits the other wall. And the oven doesn't have a temperature guage so I have no idea how hot I am setting it for. And the radiators have started leaking when they are on in the winter, leaving water on the carpet. But I am hesitant to tell my landlord about these things. Because one of the things I experienced was bedbugs. When I told my landlord, he got crazy and said he should throw me out. I reminded him that I was disabled, and had nothing to do with the bedbugs, and he softened up a bit and called his friend who works for Orkin. The bugs were eliminated but I don't think I can talk to him about any other problems. If you can help me move on here, I don't know what I could say. Except thanks for giving me another chance to move on. I would appreciate any help that you might be able to give me, but please don't tell my landlord--at least not until I am ready to move out.
